Daily maintenance and handling notes

Maintenance essentials

Here are the key points of programmer maintenance from MaxWiz.

1. Store adapters properly. When an adapter is not in use, keep it in a sealed bag to prevent oxidation and dust from reaching the contacts.

2. Handle programmers carefully. Do not stack programmers on top of each other — pins can be bent, or solder joints on the socket can short out.

3. Keep chips clean. Contamination causes shorts and poor contact, and fouls the test pins. Clean chips before programming.

4. Clean sockets carefully. Lead-free chips oxidise more easily and leave residue on the test pins. Isopropyl alcohol in an ultrasonic cleaner works well — never use aggressive solvents such as thinner, benzene, acetone or concentrates. Watch the cleaning temperature: a few seconds at room temperature is enough; low temperature or a long soak both damage the socket.

Used and stored correctly, a programmer lasts around ten years. Routine maintenance makes it last longer. These are the main points — we hope they help.

Notes when programming

Many IC chips are expensive today, so care is needed when programming them — a handling mistake can destroy the chip. Here are some notes on chip programming.

1. Handle the IC carefully when inserting it, to avoid damaging the chip and the socket.

2. Never insert the IC the wrong way round. On chips removed from a board, first check the pins for solder bridges — otherwise the socket may be damaged.

3. Operators must be trained before programming. Do not run other programs on the computer while programming.

4. Report any fault immediately to your supervisor.

These are the main points to keep in mind when programming ICs. If you have questions about chip programming, contact MaxWiz.
